NBA Spring Professional Development Conference
176 braille enthusiasts enjoyed 26 workshops and presentations in Colorado Springs during the Spring Conference April 26-28. Braille transcribers, teachers and school paraprofessionals learned new techniques with braille translation software, were introduced to two new software programs for producing tactile graphics, practiced proofreading skills, studied music braille, Nemeth Code, braille formats, foreign language and guidelines for materials for young readers.
In addition to workshops, 48 participants enjoyed a trip on the Cog Railway almost to the summit of Pikes Peak. A spring snowstorm blocked the tracks near the summit, but the train stopped to let passengers get out and enjoy throwing a few snowballs. Nancy Stevens, a US Paralympian, shared motivational stories of challenges and victories, performed several songs along with the stories, and entertained us throughout one evening. The highlight of the banquet and installation of new officers (besides the wonderful prime rib) was a very motivating speech by Diane Spence, NBA's new President. Watch for the text of her speech in the summer edition of the Bulletin.
Thanks to all of you who participated and shared in making this conference a high altitude success!
Please join us in October for the fall conference in Minneapolis.
