    Hello,

    I'm proofreading a book in which the term al Qaeda appears often. Is the letter combination "ae" here a diphthong, or not? If not, then the ed would be contracted, correct?

    Yes, it is a dipthong and therefore, the contyraction "ed" may NOT be used.
