Does an entire paragraph need to be emphasized in order to follow the UEB rule:

9.9 Typeform passages extending across consecutive same text elements
9.9.1 When transcribing a typeform passage which extends over more than one text element (e.g. a series of consecutive paragraphs), each text element is preceded by the typeform passage indicator and the typeform is terminated only at the point where the typeform changes.

I have attached a sample where a portion of one paragraph is emphasized and the next paragraph is also emphasized. Should we begin the italics in the first paragraph, repeat the opening at the second paragraph and close it where it ends in the second paragraph? This seems to extend over more than one element????

Or does the whole paragraph have to be emphasized in order for the rule to apply?

The entire paragraph does not have to be emphasized for this to be true.  Repeat the passage indicator at the beginning of the next paragraph and then terminate only once.
