I have a book that has been divided into 40 volumes and 4 supplemental volumes. I have already transcribed all 4 supplemental volumes and 11 regular volumes. I will send off the remaining 29 volumes as I transcribe them.

Once I completed the last supplemental volume, I put “End of Supplement 4.” (There was no period in the actual Braille file)

My proofer told me that it should say “The End” on the last page of supplement 4 being that it was the last page of text in the actual print book.

I explained that even though I understood his reasoning (and I honestly think that he is right), being that we are shipping the 4 supplemental volumes with the first few volumes, “The End” statement should go at the end of volume 40 being that that’s going to be the last volume transcribed.

He countered with; if the whole book was transcribed before it was shipped off, then “The End” would go in the last supplemental volume (and again, I agree).

Therefore, since Braille Formats 1.6 doesn’t specifically address this issue, can you please give your opinion on this?  On the last page of the last supplemental volume, should it say “The End” or “End of Supplement 4” or “End of Supplemental Material?”

And if you don’t mind, please explain your answer. Thank you very much.

Hmmm...well, there definitely is no rule that covers this.  All I can give you is my opinion.

It seems wrong to put "The End" on a volume when the student does not have all of the volumes...even if the material in that 4th supplement is the end of the print book.  The supplements are used as reference materials - which is why they are often transcribed early on.

I would agree with you that "End of Supplement 4" makes the most sense at this point in your work.  Then I would put "The End" at the end of Volume 40.  I would assume that your title page says "In 40 volumes and 4 supplements" which should be explanation enough for the reader to know what is going on.

I will add this to the list of things that need clarifying when an errata is created for Braille Formats.  Thanks for the question!
