Our question is about the slash and the ing contraction.

Would it be correct to use the ing contraction  before the slash  in the following example?                                           singing/laughing

The instructions under 10.4.3 of UEB Rules states "The beginning of a word is defined as the letters-sequence which follows a space, hyphen, or dash ..."

My thinking is that it's okay to use the ing contraction before the slash, but I'd like an expert's opinion.

    Thank you,

    Candace Richardson

There is nothing in the UEB rules about not using the ing contraction before a slash...the "beginning of the word" rule would not apply here as neither ing's in your example is at the beginning of the word.

You are correct, you CAN use ing before the slash.
