Initial-Letter Contractions: 13 Exceptions to the Rule

Description: The Rules of UEB tell us to “use the initial-letter contraction as a wordsign and wherever the letters it represents occur.” The word “wherever” in the rules is often followed by the dreaded “except for …” There are specific provisions in UEB §10.7 that challenge the use of 13 of the 33 initial-letter contractions “wherever they occur.” We’ll study the exceptions to the rule that restrict their use and explore examples that may help to remember them.
