Following print when words are divided between print pages

BF 1.10.1 says to “follow print when words are divided between print pages.”  Does this apply to syllabicated words as well?

We have been treating syllabicated words between print pages that are not divided for purposes of instruction the same as if they were at the end of a line in print and brailling them as a whole on the page the word begins on.  When it is a hyphenated-compound word we follow print and Braille it as is.

Is this correct?

In the case of the syllabicated words I would also look to rule 20.2.1c which wants the syllabicated word on one line if it fits. So you would be correct to keep the word as a whole on the page (and line) it began.

Thank you. Your example shows the syllabicated word being divided between print pages, I assume as printed (following print) which is how I understand the rule. I think I misunderstood your advice "to keep the word as a whole on the page (and line) it began". The original question itself is confusing to me. Regardless, I will continue to follow print when a word is divided between print pages.

My original answer was to keep the syllabified words together and place the page change after. The idea behind rule 20.2.1c is to maintain that a syllabified word is on one line.

I asked the Formats Committee the question concerning dividing syllabified words between pages. The Committee had a good discussion with differing opinions. You can consider grade or if phonetics are involved. Is print or syllabification more important to the reader. Since we can not determine if the reader uses the syllabification, we chose the syllabification and that we would not divide the syllabified words between pages.

The Formats Committee has continued discussing this topic and has now come to the conclusion that we would say to follow print and divide the syllabified word between pages as in print. This is the most consistent with the rules and UEB.
