After reading John Romeo’s article on the transition of inmates to society and continuing to produce braille I found it to be totally accurate. I have been trying to establish contacts for 5 months now and have gotten nowhere. I have talked to a couple of places and even filled out the tax forms they emailed me; all with no call back. I do not have a business license and wonder if that may be the reason.  I have six certificates including Nemeth and US and Canada UEB Proficiency. What other avenues do you suggest I take to procure a job or contracts in transcribing braille. Can you help me in furthering my endeavors?

    Hi Marty,

Have you attended any professional development conferences or other gatherings of transcribers to meet people and get to know them? Have you reached out to other transcribers or others who are formerly incarcerated who have their own businesses?  Connecting with people is one of the best ways to assist in building your business. Having certifications is great and a necessary component but networking and forming relationships is also essential. Other than that, I don't have any magic words to offer you. If you'd like to reach out to John Romeo, I can put you in touch with him. Just send me an email. Hope this helps.
