The rule says to leave one blank line between the Title/subtitle and the author so that is what I would do.
In regards to blank lines between the groupings, you may put the word "By" on a line by itself above the Transcriber's name but it does not say we can do that with the publisher or copyright. Leave your blank lines between groupings starting from the bottom of the page and working upward. If that means 3 blank lines between those groupings, that is what you do.Hope this helps.
JanaChris ClemensKeymasterIn a dedication, you must follow print ... if the word To is centered over Donna, then in braille it would be done the same way and in that case to word cannot be contracted.
JanaChris ClemensKeymasterI am curious as to why you are breaking the word apart ... if you are doing so as an "agency decision" in using every available cell, then either way is accetable. If you are dividing the word apart as part of your certificationl manuscript, you no longer have to divide words at the end of a line, so I would not divide it at all.
Jana
Chris ClemensKeymasterI would use the "the" contraction as the rule states that "the" takes precedence.

Chris ClemensKeymasterThanks, Dorothy.
You affirmed my fear. I was afraid I would have to use that unwieldy construction you came up with. I saw that square you mentioned, and hoped there was a more elegant solution.
While searching the interwebby for info on this symbol, I found a similar symbol with the cross appearing as a multiplication cross. So I may have a pair of unwieldy symbols.
Thanks again for your input.
Chris ClemensKeymasterHi. I don't believe this is actually a circle with a plus sign. I have attached a small .doc with the suggestion of using a circle with interior modification (horizontal bar and superposed vertical bar). Be sure whatever you use that you include in a tn or on the special symbols page the description of the print symbol. I based my suggestion on a symbol that is present in the Nemeth Code -- a square with interior diagonals-- which you can see on page 112 of the code book.
If anyone knows of a symbol that has already been created to represent this print sign, please advise.
Chris ClemensKeymasterThanks Barbara. There is no need to draw these grids since the student will not be answering questions in this manner.
Chris ClemensKeymasterIf this is the kind of grid where there are columns of circled numbers which the student darkens and then the student writes the number above, Dorothy answered this question for me on February 21, 2008. You can find the correspondence by searching the OLD FORUM for "gridded response" by user name bataffet.

Chris ClemensKeymasterThanks Jana. I didn't see anywhere in 19.2b(2) that said you couldn't have more than one blank line between the Title/Subtitle and the Author. It says there must be a blank line left there and it can't be deleted to save space.
So I should have one blank line between the Title and Author and three between the three other groupings rather than two groups of two lines and two groups of three?
Or... 19.2b(2) says to use up more space you can put "by" on the next line over the transcriber's name. Can I also put "by" on a line to itself before the publisher and/or the copyright?
For instance:
Published 1966
by
Publisher's Name
Copyright 1966
by
Name of Copyright holder-Tim
Chris ClemensKeymasterYour special symbols page is necessary for your certification manuscript. 🙂

JanaChris ClemensKeymasterRule IV sec 28a. says when only one letter or any combination of unspaced letters is in direct contact with only its opening or closing grouping sign, the ELI is used or not used as though the grouping signs were not present.
P(A and B) the P is adjacent to the grouping sign which is followed by a letter. If you take out the grouping sign the P is in contact with the A -- so that A is no longer a single letter requiring a letter indicator. The B does need the ELI because if the grouping sign is removed, it is a single letter standing alone.Rule IV sec 25a(vi) defines a single letter (in part) as followed by a space or a punctuation mark in print. A grouping sign is not a mark of punctuation. The P does not need the ELI in any of your examples because it does not meet the criteria for a single letter. Because it is not a single letter, it does not need the ELI.
Does all of that help at all?
Chris ClemensKeymasterHi Barbara. I have not heard of that restriction. Dorothy
Chris ClemensKeymasterWell, the problem is the print copy does <i>not</i> contain a copyright symbol. It just has the word "Copyright". Is an ampersand an unusual enough symbol to warrant a special symbols page just for one use? 19.2d says "if these symbols are used only one time, or rarely, in a volume, they should be explained in a transcriber's note in the text." But I couldn't do that on the title page...
Thanks so much for your help, Jana!
Chris ClemensKeymasterTim,
Remember, you can only have one blank line between the Title/Subtitle and the Author and when you have extra lines (say two blank lines between groupings, you start at the bottom of the page and work up toward the top. So if you already have two blank lines between the groupings (and your one between the title and author, you may insert a third blank line, again starting at the bottom of the page. I don't have the instruction amnual at my fingertips right now, but yes, you can add a third line between groupings. You just have to remember to start with the blank between the bottom two groupings and work your way up the page. Hope this makes sense. I will try to give you a more definitive answer once I return to my office.
Happy Holidays!Jana
Chris ClemensKeymasterHello,
In regards to your special symbols page, it IS required if you have the copyright symbol on your title page and the ampersand is required as well ... if there is one in print, you have to put one in braille. Refer to 19.2d in the Instruction Manual for required symbols 🙂 These are changes from the 2007 BANA Update.
🙂 Jana
