We have clarified the wording...you may split a list between braille pages...but you must have at least two items from the list on a braille page (8.3.5) if the list starts at the bottom of a braille page.
Cindi
claurentParticipantThe first list you reference are the REQUIRED symbols. The other list is what we are recommending as needed for newer readers of UEB. As the agency/transcriber, the decision to include the symbols on the second list is yours to make. At my agency, we include them for the most part.
Cindi
claurentParticipant- I would say that since the numbers are consecutive, I would consider them one "section" of text and I would do them all as 1-5, 3-5. But, as the transcriber, you get to decide what is a section. 🙂
- You wrap based on the volume...so volume 2 might have runovers in cell 7, volume 3 runovers might be in cell 9.
- The definition on the special symbols page should say something like "acute accent above following letter". That would apply to either a capital letter or a lowercase letter.

claurentParticipantThank you for being honest that this is for your manuscript. As such, I cannot give you a specific answer. But I can tell you some general things about headings. According to 4.2 in Braille Formats, "centered headings are used to represent the print headings of major sections of the text, and cell 5 and cell 7 headings are used to represent the print headings for subsections shown within major sections". There is no rule that says "this type of print MUST be this type of heading". It is up to the transcriber to determine, based on the material being transcribed, what is a major heading and what is a sub heading. I would suggest reading carefully through section 4 of Braille Formats for more information (and examples) on headings. Then decide how you will do your headings and be consistent.
As a side note, I'm doing a webinar on headings this Friday 🙂 1:00 Eastern. There is a blog about it on the website.
Cindi
claurentParticipantSee 1.6.5g and Example 1-6 on page 1-8 of BF 2016. The other rules are still applied (The End cannot be on a page by itself so if your end matter end on line 24 you need to bring one line to the next braille page, etc).
Cindi
claurentParticipantThe committee decided to make the Table of Contents (cont.) an exception to the rule requiring that added text needs to be within transcriber's note indicators. Another exception to this rule is with guide word text. The reason these two items were determined to be "different" is that the puzzle transition is usually on a line by itself so the added cells required for TN indicators is rarely a problem. With Table of Contents and guide word text, space can be an issue.
Cindi
claurentParticipantSorry for the delay...I was checking around to see if I was way off base before I answered 🙂
My suggestion for this is to put
Section 1 ...
Chapters 1-12 ...
Blank line
TN Volume 2 TN
Chapters 13-20
I know that it is not strictly following print, but it makes clear to the reader where the material can be found.
Cindi
claurentParticipantSorry for the delay...
Yes, a list item can be split between braille pages...
Cindi
claurentParticipantYes, a nested list can be divided between braille pages. So can a simple list if it's long.
Cindi
claurentParticipantSorry for the delay - I was asking around for advice. We recommend doing an "original" and "revised" version for that grade level.
Another suggestion is based off the old Promising Practices that used to be posted on the APH website. It's sort of a modified Original and revised. I attached a picture.

Cindi
claurentParticipantThere is no rule about this.
I asked a couple people and everyone agreed that they would not include the imprint information.
Cindi
claurentParticipantYou do not need a grade 1 indicator if the letter is not standing alone. So you DO need one on print page v, but not on print page av.
Cindi
claurentParticipantYou should use the modifiers in Section 4 of UEB for diacritic markings...and the UEB symbols for the eng and schwa shown in 4.4. IPA symbols are only used when other IPA marking are shown (see section 14 of UEB)...not for 'regular' diacritics.
UEB states that contractions may be used in syllabized words or words with pronunciations (diacritics). Formats states that only those items used in spelling lists or in spelling activities would be uncontracted.
Cindi
claurentParticipantI'm not sure I am seeing this correctly...but I'm think you have a total of 30 tosses (with their sums) in three columns across the print page. There is no specific rule that says you should keep three columns (or do them in 1), but I would transcribe them in one column so that the relationship between the tosses can be seen more easily by a braille reader. But that is just my opinion.
