The list that starts with "May be included" is for agencies and/or transcriber's to make their own decisions. Those symbols are not required on the SS page for transcriptions.

Per Bonnie Read (the BANA chair for the Early Learning Materials committee):

Section 2.2 of the Guidelines for Early Educational Materials states: "The Transcriber's Notes page: (2.2.3) Lists all the transcriber's notes ... that appear in the volume at the kindergarten and first grade levels."

    • 1. Does this mean that the individual notes should only be included in the braille TN page in grades K-1? (not grades 2-3?)
Yes. By the time they are at grades 2 and 3 they are familiar enough with TNs. However, it is not wrong to include them in grades 2 and 3 if the transcriber feels it is necessary.

Section 4.3 on the inkprint Teacher's Reference Materials states: "The Teacher's Reference Material should include the following: (4.3.2.c) a print copy of the TN page(s), including a listing of each transcriber's note from within the braille volume."

    • 2. Does this mean that all grade levels K-3 should have the individual transcriber's notes listed in the inkprint, or only grades K-1 since it seems that only K-1 will have the individual notes listed in braille?
The full list of TNs is included in inkprint for all grades for the teacher's benefit (who may not be familiar with braille).

    Her answers are in bold.

Hmmm...this is something I have never seen! It's always new in the braille world 🙂

My inclination would be to go with the title page. Especially with a graphic novel. The cover is likely very colorful and stylish to match the genre - the title page should be the more "detailed" info on the book. But - there are certainly no rules for this situation.  You could ask the requestor which title they would prefer.

Based on what I see, no. Just put it where it appears in print. 🙂

I am out of town and for whatever reason I can't open your file. I agree with your logic and stick with the idea that dividing words is not the way to go.

Can you tell me the meaning of the / versus the // ?  It appears that you could divide at the places with the double lines ( // ).  From looking at Google - the double lines are the 'breaks' in the poem (the foot). It seems to me that the single lines mean something else...unless the surrounding text says otherwise 🙂   The double lines all appear to be after a word - then you are just left with that one really long bit from lines 2/3...of course I didn't braille this so I don't really know how long this would take 🙂  My inclination would be to NOT divide the words...I would break the rule about not dividing within a foot before I would break up a word...especially when it's in a foreign language.

I would absolutely put the scansion marks within the text rather than above it like it is in print. They would not make sense if they were above the words in braille.

    Hope this helps 🙂

You are correct. A single-word switch indicator is required.

Most readers prefer the contracted forms of words when reading braille - which is one purpose of the single-word switch indicator...to allow the text to switch codes without having to use the open/close indicators. In the phrase "2+3 and 4+6" the word 'and' should have a switch indicator and should be contracted. The other purpose of the single-word switch is to let the reader know that the word is not part of the math. That's the reason you would need a single-word switch indicator on a word between expressions even if that word doesn't use a braille contraction.

Yes, answer keys should be included. They are usually divided up and placed at the end of the volume to which they apply. So if Chapter 2 is in volume 3, the answer key for Chapter 2 would be at the end of volume 3.

Teacher materials are a bit different - that is usually something that the requestor must specify. Some want the teacher materials included and some don't. It depends on how the book will be used. I suggest you request clarification from the person paying for the transcription.

In my opinion, your TN says that graphs will not have switches...not that they can't be within switches. Leave Nemeth open until after the table. The closing switch indicator would go by itself in cell 1 after a blank line following the closing box line. If you wanted, you could modify your TN slightly to reflect that...something like "Cartesian graphs are created in Nemeth whether or not they are enclosed within Nemeth switch indicators."

That's a good question! BF does not directly address this. I would suggest that you use the print page number that actually appears on your volume. So for volume 3, the TOC entry would use 739.

Do you know what DNE means?

I would agree with your inclination...to close at the end of Question 2 and open again after the identifier for 7.

If I am understanding your question...the notes are being put into each volume with the material to which they apply, right? Per BF 16.9.2b "Endnotes at the end of a book generally are divided and placed at the end of the volume in which the references appear." So the notes are placed at the end of each volume and should keep the print page number that applies - in this case, 738.

Let's say that the notes for Chapters 1 & 2 appear on print page 738 in the print text. Let's say that each chapter is one volume - so Chapter 1 is in volume 1 and Chapter 2 is in volume 2. At the end of volume 1 is print page 738 with the notes for Chapter 1 and at the end of Volume 2 is print page 738 again with the notes for Chapter 2.

In the Volume 2, Table of Contents, the contents for Chapter 2 would be first followed by a blank line and then the Notes page showing print page 738.

Does this answer your question? If I have misunderstood the question please clarify 🙂

It seems to me you have two options:

    1. Leave it where it is in print and then put a brief embedded TN after each time it is mentioned before you actually get to it - something like "Figure 1.1 TN on page a35 TN" OR
    2. Move it to where it is first mentioned in the text, reference it's location when needed and then put a TN on the print page where the figure actually appears - TN Figure is moved to page a27 TN.

If you move it you also need a TN stating that the figure is moved from page ... so in my opinion, the "cleaner" method is to leave it where it appears in print and just put in embedded TNs to let the reader know where to find the figures.

If the placement is very consistent and it can be explained on the TN page you could avoid all the embedded TNs by putting something on the TN page like "The figures mentioned in the text appear at the end of each section." Of course, to do it that way, they must ALWAYS be that way in print 🙂

Because the parentheses need to be in the same code, your transcription is the best option.
