Hi Julie. Formats and Nemeth agree that you will need 2 blank lines: one between the spatial material and the page change indicator according to Nemeth Code and another between the page change indicator and the heading to satisfy Formats Guidelines.

Hi Fran. Nemeth Code doesn't specify how to transcribe carried numbers in multiplication. However, the rule about carried numbers in addition is applied in multiplication problems. The carried numbers and cancelled numbers will go above the carried number line, which is the length of the separation line. Make sure you keep the columns aligned. Space must be left in the multiplier and multiplicand to accomodate the cancellation indicators. Space must also be left in the partial products above the comma that appears in Step 4. See the attached document. Dorothy

I'm checking with both the math committee and the formats committee. I should have an answer for you very soon.

I double checked with the Tactile Graphics expert. The square should be drawn, as required by the Tactile Graphics guidelines, not represented with braille dots. The suggestion was to collage a solid square for the shape instead of tooling.

I meant to say cancellation, not parens. so to restate my question, is it ok to use cancellation within a matrix or should I tool, thank you!

    I was afraid of that:)

You have quite a mix of systems. I would say that generally if the variables are lined up on the left of the equation, I would line up the systems even though it might be off a little on the right side of the comparison sign (line up by place value). #44 is definitely not aligned because you have x's and y's vertically arranged. In #45, even though the first variable in all three equations is aligned, the system itself is not. For #9, the variables, the solution, and the comparison signs are aligned in print, so I would align them in braille, even though the comparison sign in the second equation will take more space. You are not alone in being confused about whether to align or not.

Yes, a blank line is required between a running head and instructions in Nemeth. Be aware that there was an update to the Nemeth Code this year that eliminates the blank line between a cell-5 heading and instructions that follow.

I would say they are decimals. I wouldn't want to have to insert the punctuation indicator before all of the periods if they were periods.

It really helps us in answering questions if we have the actual print to look at. Your description may not land in my brain in the shape you intend it to land. Could you attach a picture of the symbol as it is used (in context)?

In Nemeth, directive text is formatted as instructions (5/3) if the instructions are followed by non-spatial itemized problems. (sec. 191) If what follows the text is not itemized problems, then the text is formatted as a paragraph (3/1) In your example, the instructions are followed by itemized problems.

I apologize for letting this fall through the cracks. I can see what the models are trying to demonstrate, but unless you will actually draw them, I don't know that they can be represented any other way.

Hi Melissa. I'm afraid I'm sort of at a loss about this. When working with polynomials, everything is supposed to be aligned. (Sec. 178) There is no way to align this problem when you have to use a spatial fraction to show the cancellation. (sec. 60) I have attached a picture of a maybe solution. For problem 8) I aligned the numerator of the fractions with the number in the addition problem from which it derives. Not technically accurate, but you need to show where the numbers come from. For the problem with the cancellation, I might solve the addition problem, then repeat that solution with the part that shows each side of the equation multiplied by (3). There might be some trouble wording a tn to explain what I did. I am certainily open to any good solution.

If the italicized expression or phrase if part of a labeled statement, the open and close italic indicators must be used. Nemeth sec. 33

It would help me to answer your question if I knew (from context) what the purpose is for the underlining. Would you be able to attach the complete page or question, rather than just the expression?
    Thank you.
