I'm way ahead of you! I've checked with Larry and Heidi on a few things already - I'm certified in music braille and having a blast doing full scores! Luckily, this score only has the German without translations - makes a little easier to manage, I think! I've got one coming up that has three languages... that should be fun!

Oh an opera score! You may also want to consult over in our Music Braille forum, especially if you are also transcribing the actual music. They will be glad to help with the music and with issues involving language and incorporating the libretto and other text.

Thanks so much - the symbol did not come through in the post. (I've just placed an order for the manual.) I'm working on an opera score with German text. For some reason, the EBAE only lists the vowels with umlauts and not the ess-zett. I look forward to getting the manual and learning more! Thanks again!

The symbol is in the post. Didn't you see it? Dots 2346. What are you transcribing? Is this a German foreign language book for someone taking a course? Somthing else? These'a lot to be aware of in foreign language braille besides a few symbols.

The Interim Manual is a must-have for foreign language transcribing. It is available for a small charge to NBA members. Inquire at the NBA office.

Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Could you scan a page so that I am sure about your question?

    Hi Susan,

As a Regular member of NBA, the cost for the Interim Manual is $32. If you're getting the price of $48 off of the website store, it's because the member price will only show if a member is logged in and looking at the item. Additionally, the member discount on items are posted at the end of the transaction when checking out.

Also note, the Ask an Expert log in and password are different and independent of the store. If you are having trouble logging in to the store, or require assistance with logging in, feel free to contact the office directly and I'd be happy to help.

I realize that may not answer your question about a newer version coming out, and I will let a forum admin field that question. As always, thanks for your support!

Use the rule in Braille Formats.

Reminder: The new 2011 Braille Formats goes into effect for new projects started after Jan. 1, 2013 and after that date, it is required. It is recommended, but NOT required, that NEW projects started now be transcribed also with the new Formats. It is available for free .pdf download at the BANA website, http://www.brailleauthority.org

I think what we should do is what the guidelines say to do. By date I am referring also to the copyright and the guidelines are specific as to the copyright and DATE that is to be listed on the braille title page. There is no mention of adding any additional copyright information on the braille title page.

I am attaching a .docx file of this response so that is can be more easily shared with the transcriber.

Thank you for including the scans of the print pages. That is always very helpful.

I’m not clear which set of rules you are referring to. It looks like you refer to the Promising Practices for Early Literacy.

These rules are NO LONGER in effect. They have been removed from the APH website.

That means the result Formats rules should be used. There is a new set of BANA Guidelines for textbooks. It is available from the BANA website (www.brailleauthority.org) as a free .pdf download that you can print out. These guidelines go into effect Jan. 1.2013, and they can be used now.

The old 1997 Formats may still be used for books started before Jan. 1, 2013. After that, it is obsolete and should be discarded.

There are a few provisions for children’s books in both the new 2011 Formats and the 1997 Formats, but they are not the same in each case. If you will clarify for me which rules you are using I can make recommendations about transcribing this book correctly.

I am not able to help with the Duxbury code aspect, but I can refer you to appropriate resources in that field if you still need after we clarify the rules you are using.

I’ll be glad to help identify the appropriate guidelines to use with this material when you let me know which guidelines you are using.

See Sectrion 2.3.6d. Only the principal copyright date is listed as shown. Additional copyright dates are not listed on the title page.

Follow print order and braille the these acknowledgments accordingly. I don't see anything in Formats about moving them. This does not appear to be cover material.

Each group of print page numbers ends on the last page in that group bearing text. Each group of print page numbers is listed separately on the title page. See the examples given in Section 2.3 and other places in Formats. The last blank page of a group is has not text and doesn't need to be accounted for because there is no text-bearing page in that group after it.

This is a sidebar. See the section on Sidebars. I would place in the following paragraph as explained in the sidebar section.

I would not necessarily consider it an exception. This is not mentioned in the guidelines, it has never been in the rules. Formats rarely tells us what NOT to do. There are too many things that we need TO do. Items and issues that need to be in transcriber's notes are generally mentioned specifically throughout Formats.

NO TN for end of volume notice

See 1.6.2 in Formats. Tables are single spaced.
