In your example Cindi, you would then use the Fraction Indicator for linear form which is the dots 456, 34. Is that part correct?

I am most confused by the General Fraction Indicators, the Opening and Closing indicators. I am looking at 11.3.4, would these types of examples be the only time you would use these indicators in literary context.

Not necessarily. If you have fractions in a literary context (like "she took 1/2 hour to get ready") you would use the symbols and rules listed there.

All transcriber's notes should be done in UEB. If you needed, for some reason, the use a TN within Nemeth text, you would need to exit Nemeth mode to do it.

I tried both an inkjet and lazerjet printer and they didn't work for me. We've used both Xerox and Richo photocopiers at work and they worked fine. Sometimes the issue is getting a print driver that will work with the odd size (11x11.5) paper. The main think to look for it a copier that has a "straight through" path (as opposed to one that moves the paper up and down and around. Another thing you could try it to use the bypass tray, which usually is straight through. Yes, I agree that it certainly makes a marshmallow mess when the swellpaper gets stuck inside a photocopier!! The technicians are never very impressed with the situation, though with our current copiers we haven't had that happen in a very long time.
Good luck finding the right one. It helps if you tell the salesperson about the straight path issue, and I usually do a site visit armed with some swellbraille paper and a disk of tactile files to try.

What, exactly, would you like to know about the CNIB course/exam? The course is 11 exercises. Once the exercise are completed (through self-study) an exam can be requested from CNIB. They send the test out (with instructions) and, if it is successfully completed, a certificate is available. This is for those who already know braille and there is no cost. I have taken this course/exam.

There is also a course/certification test for those who don't know braille yet. That course is a full course (about double the number of lessons) and costs $500. Once the course is completed, an exam can be requested and again, if successfully completed, a certifice is available.

If I have not answered all your questions, post again!

I was thinking that this may need further explanation. I have 3 documents that I need to transcribe into braille. These documents are for Dedication plaques, and they need to be sent to sign vendor as an image. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello again,
DBT is offering 11.2 now. For help in transitioning from Megadots to DBT it is suggested that you sign up on the duxuser list serv, if possible attend CTEBVI and future NBA trainings.

Are you using 1997 Formats or the new 2011 Formats Guidelines?

If using the new guidelines, follow print order and treat this as front matter. See section 2.7. If using 1997 Formats, treat this as a p-page and put it after the Table of Contents, if there is one.

In any case, the print order should be carried also in braille, thereby giving the braille reader the same experience as the print reader, encountering the index in an unexpected place.

I have now received clarification from BANA myself. The understanding I had about Promising Practices being withdrawn was erroneous on my part and I do apologize. Promising Practices continues to be in use and available to download from APH and BANA websites.

The original question was a concern about following the provision in Promising Practices that requires a TN preceding each graphic that tells the student to ask. There is no such requirement in the new Tactile Graphics Guidelines. I recommend that Tactile Graphics experts, especially those close to the new guidelines be consulted on this.
